I have done JOIN on subject and text to get the meaning of "they"... accomplished the mission - "they" should be able to access it as well as anyone else, so keep that in mind - may be protect individual folders by forbidding "o"thers to access them, and share at the group level.

@kleaman are you looking in mnt/DATA/data or /mnt/DATA/data (with a leading slash)?
Could you please try:
groups
cd /mnt/DATA/data/studies/manish/mvmnda
touch /mnt/DATA/data/studies/manish/mvmnda/lalalala
And show us the output of those commands? (you can just copy all the lines you get including the commands above from your terminal).

I'm still getting permission denied for mnt/DATA/data. Good news is that the server login is working!
