  24. Disorientation and impaired wayfinding are often the first signs of neurodegenerative diseases.
  25. Understanding the factors that affect wayfinding, is crucial in order to appropriately cope with
  26. the ageing population.Here we examined the relevance of sociodemographic determinants and vestibular performance on
  27. wayfinding strategies in a German representative sample. It is the first time that navigational strategies
  28. are tested across the entire population. We demonstrate that gender, age, regional urbanization and
  29. education were relevant sociodemographic determinants for wayfinding and that vestibular decrease,
  30. measured by vertigo/dizziness and the self-assessment of sense of balance, led to reduced wayfinding ability
  31. scores in general. In addition people either combine both wayfinding techniques or use no wayfinding strategy,
  32. instead of choosing one strategy over the other. Contrary to findings from 30 years ago, younger individuals no
  33. longer have a clear navigation strategy.
